Implantable BCI Object Process Model

Workgroup:  Modular Components, Interoperability, and ISO/Other Standards

Date Updated: 1 May 2026

Authors: Rob Franklin & Matt DeNardo

Overview:

The model shows the flow of information through an iBCI in the Object Process Methodology format.  Briefly, an iBCI User modulates Neural Signals. Those Neural Signals are detected by an iBCI Neural Interface and processed by a Signal Processing Subsystem into (Internal) Processed Neural Signals. A Telemetry Subsystem transmits the Processed Neural Signals externally where an External Processing Unit uses the signals to Restore & Rehabilitate the iBCI User.

Audience and Application:

The primary audience for this diagram is developers of BCI systems who are looking to create a system partitioning that is intended to maximize reuse by aligning with the system model described herein. Another audience for this diagram is developers of modules intended to be used with or as part of BCI systems who are seeking to facilitate integration of their module into a system being developed elsewhere.
